Review Corner - Billa 2007!

Note: This is quite a long review, but that's how my night has been after seeing the movie. Read it fully, am sure it's worth it, more so if you are an Ajith fan.

Before I go on to launch an attack on the movie, I request all Superstar fans to forget Billa 2007 as a bad dream. I am a neutral viewer as far as So-Called-Ultimate-Star Ajith Kumar is concerned and have been a victim of repeated let-downs and poor screenplay in most of thala's movies. After a not-so-good performance by varalaru, a box-office bomb by Aalwar and an unfortunately mediocre satisfaction by Kireedom, Ajith should have been more careful in choosing his movies, but the unlearning actor seems to be doting on replaying his errors. I am a Vijay fan, yes, but I do not hold any aversion to Ajith as such, though that feeling is slowly but steadily building up against his movies. I should say that, in this matter, I have been more patient than most kollywooders.

Though the plot is the same as the original movie, the screenplay is lamentable, PERIOD! Ajith has played an international don in this remake of the 1980 block-buster trend-setter movie 'Billa', performed then by the only person who can ever be Billa - Rajinikanth! The movie has been shot all in Malaysia and the backdrop iBillas gorgeous. Vishnu Vardhan, amidst all expectations and hype, has managed to blunder in maintaining the flow and the onscreen transition of characters has ended up maladroitly. The first half felt like watching clips of a movie that keeps the viewer constantly hoping for a grip on the story. The set and the camera reminds one of Don (by Shahrukh), one could see its influence by large, though it managed to come nowhere near the attempt.

Ajith's introduction scene in the airport hangar is a balanced experiment to portray his adept skills and attitude, though it leaves behind an acidic smell for those who expected more. The car chase, with its drifts, is the best pick in the movie. The camera has done a great job here. There are innumerable local and international don's and mafia's named fashionably like Steve and Mike and Mark and John and Tom and Dick and Harry who do business with Billa to desperately prove he is an international don. The scenes lack a subtle transition from one to another and Ajith's performance is vacant, sometimes even frozen. The dialogue delivery is in monotone and occasionally, I even looked around for some assistance from my neighbours to help me understand why a particular dialogue was scripted, but they were equally clueless. Some even sighed in pregnant silence, though some Ajith fans made up for the embarassing moments with a few whistles and I prayed to God to forgive the poignant souls.

Nayanthara and Namitha are the ladies. Nayanthara has done her homework well and god knows how she lost all that weight. The transition from Surya's 'Ghajini' has been mega-astronomical, her attire and style reminding us vaguely of Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider. OK, this comment comes highly biased from someone who likes Nayanthara, but her efforts to add style are commendable. From the stylish diva, she transforms to a regular heroine in the second half because, well, you know how some people cant take a lady for a gangster. Namitha, on the other hand, looks voluptuously STUPID. The stylish don has a very bad taste! Her attempt to prove her love for the don by pressing a trigger on her forehead goes in vain as he forgets to load the gun. Oh, how I wish he hadn't forgotten! Because then, we wouldn't have had to put up with the 'Nan meendum' song. It is very difficult not to squirm in your seat as she dances for the song, it is the perfect time to take a leak. The camera is at all wrong angles and the eyes are totally strained, not to mention the ears. What makes someone cast Namitha on the screen, beats me! She is too big for the bigscreen, you get the point right? We like mass heroes, yes, but mass heroines? A capital NO! But then some gentlemen might not agree with me here, but yours truly, I do not care!

The music by Yuvan is forgettable. The only savior in the movie is the song 'My naSella 2007me is Billa' that resembles Don, not bad. 'Vethalaiya potten di' will do good only with some whistles. When will Ajith dance? Someone should tell him dancing is not all about moving hips to 1 .. 2 .. 3 and shaking the fingers in 'Cheena-Thaana' style. There is more to dancing, and yes, that's why I dont try. Ajith, though, has to. 'Seval kodi' is a passing attempt but why will someone wear a freaky jean with chains and a colourful shirt for a supposed-to-be-devotional song? BGM repeats the theme that is the only good factor in the music arena. As far as comedy is concerned, Santhanam doesn't help much. Some of the look-alike-Ajith's dialogues with Prabhu have a hinting touch of smile in them, though they dont haunt. Lots of serious dialogues abound as launching pads for 'Lollu Sabha', am looking forward to that.

If you aren't an optimist, then this movie bores you to pain, disappoints you to the extreme and sucks mindblowingly. The only good positives about the movie are Ajith's charisma, Nayanthara's elegance, Prabhu's sincerity and Malaysian Geography, but that won't make a movie. Everything else is an injustice to the original. The movie would have been another 'Tirupati' if not for Rajini's brand and the hype. Ajith and Vijay have done onething in similar. After good performances in Kireedom and Pokkiri respectively, they have handed over forgettable stints in the name of 'Azhagiya Tamil Magan' and 'Billa'. An internal comparison between ATM and Billa would land the latter one step above in the podium, but then who compares rotten eggs (though I did just that)? As I was leaving, I overheard a pair saying they could have watched the original Billa at home and I thought I should echo that medicinal relief here. I am looking forward to a relentless attack by devoted Ajith fans claiming this movie as a great hit, yet again, but they did the same with movies like Red, Paramasivam and Aalwar, so let's not get there. It takes valiantly brilliant efforts to fault a movie like Billa and it takes an 'Ajith' to do just that.

Final verdict - 'Ajith's Billa, gaali Kalla.' (I did think of other things here, yea!).

Hmm...your review is well written...A well written review need not be a 'Good' review though.

I am an Ajith fan and hence I refute most of your comments. Well...you are free to write whatever you want...good, bad or ugly...

But talk about the movie being a hit...jus check this out...

This is from the producer's website and they claim and 'First Day' Collection of 10 crore. The superstar apart, no one other than ultimate star could pull this off...

I like your comment about Nayantara. and Namita ofcourse.. :)
But forget about being hit or not. I would say Neither Billa nor Billa 2007 had the charm of the actual DON.

Well said srawan. Except some fashion catwalk from ajith nothing left in the film. Walking in slow motion is ok for the first introduction scene, but for every scene walking like that is over. For me Nayanthara's intro is better than ajith's intro. Expected some spark in Ajith's action but nothing. like the dialogue from the movie 'shoot em up', he is just "a pussy with a gun in hand".

Dudey! Gr8 review... Loved the way Nayantharaa and Namitha have been described. Absolutely perfect.

Gud style and awesome observation.

Adding to ur review, all i felt is that, there shud have been a better continuity in the movie flavored with some more punch dialogues. For a movie of BILLA's calibre, the punch lines would have added more spice to it.

BILLA........ Enna kodumai sir idhu????? :(

Respectable comments out here ... So i wouldnt wanna break the routine ..

After a not-so-good performance by varalaru, a box-office bomb by Aalwar and an unfortunately mediocre satisfaction by Kireedom, Ajith should have been more careful in choosing his movies, but the unlearning actor seems to be doting on replaying his errors.

And i here thought this was the BILLA 2007 review and not a AJIT in billa and AJIT's past movies review ..But if you do want to bring how many flops ajit has given , maybe we should talk more tosh and compare it with how many flops your favorite hero has given ...

Ajit is a trier , he has tried everything and it doesnt matter if his movies end up breaking the bank , but he always tries and entertains his fan ... The same varalaru maybe a biggest floppiest shit , but there are plenty and plenty of neutral movie fans who got impressed by the dancer ajit's performance and the entire movie had the aura about it ...

So giving the not-so-good performance for varalaru - hmm might come from your vijay tinted glass [:)] ...

Though the plot is the same as the original movie, the screenplay is lamentable, PERIOD!

Liked the Don eh ?

watched the original DON ?
Since you havnt ... You found the remake as a HIT .. Bomb screen play .. As a matter of fact , the difference is you ve watched the billa with thalaivar , and its highly unacceptable to impress any one with the same plot , because ask any avid Big B fan who watched DON first and ask him if DON remake was absolutely fantastic like the first ?
take a hint .. the answer would be a simple no :)

However the directing style and maturity might differ ofcourse , don was good because the screenplay was more complete ,

billa isnt as flowing as don cos billa has got stuff which are to be deciphered by the one who is watching than the dialogues which they say ..

The scenes lack a subtle transition from one to another and
Ajith's performance is vacant, sometimes even frozen.

Goes back to my point where the hero silences the audience with his elegance and charisma instead of giving , ennangana , evalavo panrukom ida panna mattoma , adadadadadadadadadadaa kind of blinkered spouted tosh [:)] ..

Some even sighed in pregnant silence, though some Ajith fans made up for the embarassing moments with a few whistles and I prayed to God to forgive the poignant souls.

yes yes i felt the same with ATM watching it with you [:D]

! Her attempt to prove her love for the don by pressing a trigger on her forehead goes in vain as he forgets to load the gun. Oh, how I wish he hadn't forgotten!

Guess you missed the actual reason why he did it ... Its just to show that billa the international DON doesnt give a rats arse to a prostitute's love and he is just that thick to actually try if the dialogues are really said for the sake of stuff being said or it came forreal .. And for what we saw , i guess namitha said em from out of her lust for the hero because whether or not there was bullet , she tried ...

And i agree to the mass heroine en stuff .. Namitha is a dinosaur .. period .

Regarding music - Well ... dont know how much they spent on movie , but if only they had gone for rehman , could ve been a blockbuster ... BGM was good , songs weren't ...
Regarding dances ... well it is odd looking at ajit dancing in a full cam .. I agree but atleast he tries ;) since when did vijay try something which isnt in his forte ?

The movie is a life of the gangster and you dint expect a screenplay which wouldnt be cold and frozen and monotone'd dialogues because thats how a don lives ... He isnt any freak who can eff around ;) and thats why the movie is a bit dull .. Youse lot love masala and youse lot wouldnt mind a pokiri .. honestly what is pokiri ? you call that a hit ? No i am no vijay hater although i ve been sounding like one .. and i am not any ardent ajit fan either .. Am just another bloke who had time to watch the movie ( thanks to yoi :P ) and think the movie was good ... The fact of giving all the hype before the movie proved out very costly and adds to the down point ...

A remake will not exactly satisfy any one .. Especially if its thalaivar's movie .. BUt if ajit's billa isnt any where near the original billa .. then there can not be any billa which can come near it .. So whom to blame ? maybe the entire idea of the movie ? nah .. its just entertainment .. and what they want to show is just how the same billa of 2007 would ve been with much more broaded image of him being an international don ... and they ve done it to an extent well ...

Dialogues are disappointing .. Yes ! once again that immatured direction is the only difference from making the movie a actual block buster and a very good attempt at a different style ..

Agreed to all other points ( did i :P )

Good day ..

Thanks for the movie da ( nee illana naan inda padatha pathuruka mudiyuma ;D illa on comments la rouse panna mudiyuma :D )

Oh and about the pisstaking picture :D guess you are bit short in humor :P

you could ve taken a shot at the MAKER HER COMFORTABLE instead of I AM BACK .. The fact that you meant to hit it with , aya munnadi thana iruka :P only shows your ignorance and limited understanding skills :P .

wel, if i were 2 pick up phrases n comment on every sentence, my comment wud end up twice d size urs (i meant d comment).

my review on ajith is d opening statement 2 put forth tat d screenplay is bad yet again. watever hapend 2 movies like vaali? now, tat was a movie!

screenplay of don was bad? dude, dreaming? wishful thinking to support ur statements i suppose. and shahrukh's don changed d story, so it stil offered somethn different! not 2 speak of d style. ajith managed 2 maintain d charisma tho. but only charisma. tz such a pity he had d same charisma even on d other role of a hotel server. watever hapened 2 d vethala paaku rajappa?

did u say tats how a don lives? like u have been a don's rite hand 4r al time long? d server-turned-don is so cool 2 talk in an open car in d middle of d road plotting his schemes with an imp member of a gang he doubleplayed, n tat, wen hez runnin away frm police? :P. lol, i wudn have accepted tat even if it was d don himself!

dei, u realy thot namitha was a prostitute in d movie? shez suposed 2 b d don's girlfrnd. agreed, he gives a shit damn 2 her life but remember it was i who explained d purpose of tat scene 2 u :P

i realy thot ajith's dance improved after seein varalaru, but billa speaks against. success is not reaching the target, but stayin there.

music is a letdown, agreed. and if u mean red, jana, raja, billa - these as different characters, i wud prefer a monochromatic life.

i overlook and forgive u 4r making some vagrant remarks on vijay.

may peace be with you. amen!

u shud c more of lollusabha prashanth, tats d kinda jokes they play. am sure they wudn even gve an ear 2 'make her comfortable'. smthn abt d way he says am back is rippling rocking rolling funny.

Lets say i have too much time in my teenage life [:D] and i prefer to quote you :) makes sense instead of generalising the stuff ...

watever hapend 2 movies like vaali? now, tat was a movie

We can keep arguing about this ! Its all down to our perceptions and if there can be raja and red for ajit , there are plenty of DEVA , coimbtore mappilai and 40 more movies which vijay acted under his dad's direction [:)] So feel free to criticize every ONE ajit movie [;)] but be ready to take it back ...

screenplay of don was bad? dude, dreaming?

No .. I guess you missed what i said .. I had said that DoN's screen play was more matured and more complete , but the DON 2006 was no way equal and fantastic like DON Classique one ...
Since you dint watch the original , you might ve been impressed to the latter ..

Similarly if you hadnt watched the thalaivar 's version ,, you might ve even liked this ... But we have watched that one .. and hence NO remake would impress us ... and thats that ... So there is no point in feeling like ohmymoneyisstolenthankstoajit if you find billa 2007 cant be anywhere near the original billa ...

did u say tats how a don lives? like u have been a don's rite hand 4r al time long?

Guess thats where you lost it [:)] ... Does it matter what I have been and what i have done ?? have you been a vethala pakku madichy tharavan to subbudu to write a review [:D] ?? does this sound funny to how we can compare and make this a obnoxious argument ..

Its not rocket science to imagine what kind of a life it is to be a Killer ! you have no feelings , you have no emotions , your ultimate aim is to LIVE and LIVE the way you dream and you dont bother about the world ... Not one single soul ...
Thats some thought !!!! ^:)^

server-turned-don is so cool 2 talk in an open car in d middle of d road plotting his schemes with an imp member of a gang he doubleplayed, n tat, wen hez runnin away frm police?

Well mate , here ye gotta take the malaysia-is-tooooooooo-big-so-cant-two-people-talk-in-a-public-road view ? Yeah they are being hunted ?? but whats wrong ! You cant have 100000 people searching every single road ... And whats the use of it ... showing that he can run even when there is no villain around ( maybe the ghilli did just that :D dint he ? )
So hero does make a run when he sees the villain .. in this case being the police ..

u realy thot namitha was a prostitute in d movie?

Well we havnt seen one single dialogue where BILLA is an ordinary man with ordinary life with an ordinary girl friend with ordinary desires ... SO i wouldnt get into the idea of Namitha being the girl friend ...

And whatever she was .. being the item girl .. she was just a pros.. for the big guy . a keep maybe :D So whatever she says .. he is just too big a guy to fall for her words .. So the scene comes where he says yeah why not shoot yourself ?

And no .. you said fuckall when it happened :D all you said was ...

inda scene eduku varudunae puriyala pathiya > kadasi varaikum inda scene en inga pottanu theriyala ...

enda thanni ginni pottiya nee [:D] ?

Ajit's dance ... is alright .. He works hard and has tried at folk... maybe not his genre ... Dancing is just the indian way to bullshit the people with the name of entertainment ... and am thinking of the ajit who shows that effect in billa to what brosnan showed in Die another day ... So i wont care less if ajit dances like shite ;)
so go on take all the digs at how sad he can dance ... :P

About the lollu sabha ;) no machi ... i am a avid lollu sabha fan ... As i told you .. the MAKER HER COMFORTABLE was a more cheeesy one than I AM BACK .. maybe if he said .. I AM from back or i am in back .. the ayya munnadi thana iruka would be kick arse ... However i couldnt laugh at your PJ :)) .. But yeah agreed .. if lollu sabha can pisstake at some movie ;) billa 2007 is a nice treat for em ...

cheers

hey ppl i accept billa 2007 was not good. i am a die hard thala fan BTW. but the reviewer s a vijay fan who had criticised as he liked for this movie. i am not a vijay hater. but now criticising vjay coz of that person. first pl think vijay in the get up of a don like thala did. thala got good review from neutral audience and critics. pl remember that. yes remake films wont be as good as the original. yes even from my heart superstar's billa is the best for me. but ur vijay just imagine in the role of a don in that getup. u as vijay fans itself will start laughing abd say hey see this old comedy piece in a new get up like old wine in a new bottle. even i respect vijay and i like his films like nanban, thupakki, katthi, and some of his movies. but pl stop criticising ajith. tell me one besta ctor award vijay got in filmfare awards for south-tamil. ajith has got 3 in vaali, villain n varalaru. coming to villain role pl see ATM the dialogue guru the villain says to hero role vijay "intha aatatha aaramichidhu nee mudika poruthu naan thaan.........." siripu varum theartrela. poi unga aala nalla modulation kuduka sollu different roles la and get up la
